The house
A house that belongs to its hillside
Casa Campori is a restored country house of stone and terracotta, with beamed ceilings, deep window reveals and shutters that stay closed through the middle of the day. The rooms are calm and uncluttered, furnished for a long stay rather than a photograph.
There are no neighbours in sight. What you hear instead is the wind in the olive trees and, in the evening, the bells from the villages across the valley.
Living & dining
The room everyone ends up in
The kitchen and dining room are one space: a long wooden table, a stove that earns its keep in spring and autumn, and doors that stand open onto the garden. Breakfast drifts into lunch, and the map of the day gets drawn over coffee.
Next to it, a sitting area with armchairs, books and the kind of lamp you read under after a day outside.
Bedrooms
Cool rooms, crisp linen, countryside outside the window
The bedrooms are simple and restful, with wooden beds, white linen and air conditioning for the hottest weeks of the summer. Bathrooms are finished in dark stone and clear glass.
Outdoor living
Most of the holiday happens outside
Under the pergola, a long table is laid for lunch and never entirely cleared. Roses and honeysuckle climb the stone; the shade moves across the terrace through the afternoon; the grounds run out into the olive grove with places to sit in every direction.
In the evening the light goes gold, then pink over the lake, and dinner starts late because nobody is in a hurry.
The pool
A private 10 × 5 metre pool, facing the lake
The pool sits a little below the house, on its own terrace of stone, with parasols, loungers and a view straight down the valley towards Lake Trasimeno. It is heated during the relevant season, so the swimming season begins early and ends late.
For most guests this is where the week is actually spent.
Outdoor kitchen
Cooking outside, on the plancha
The outdoor kitchen is built of stone and brick, with a wood fire and a plancha — ideal for vegetables from the market, fish from the counter in Magione, or a piece of beef from the farm shop down the road.
Somebody cooks, somebody pours, the table fills up, and the evening runs on Umbrian time.
