In the heart of Italy
Casa Campori lies in the hills above Passignano sul Trasimeno, in the north-west corner of Umbria. It is a rare address: deep countryside, five minutes from a lakeside village, and close enough to the Tuscan border that both regions are a day trip.

Passignano sul Trasimeno
Our village: a promenade along the water, cafés and gelaterie, a handful of good restaurants, a weekly market, the ferry to the islands, and enough everyday Italian life — bakery, fishmonger, supermarket — that you never need to plan very far ahead.

Lake Trasimeno
The fourth-largest lake in Italy, ringed by low hills and villages such as San Feliciano, Montecolognola and Castiglione del Lago. Boats out to Isola Maggiore, long lakeside lunches, evening walks and sunsets that empty the terraces of anybody with a camera.

Cortona
Over the border in Tuscany, a walled hill town of steep lanes, Etruscan walls and a piazza built for a long aperitivo. Our favourite half-day excursion, and best in the late afternoon when the stone holds the light.

Perugia
Umbria's capital: a grand historic centre on a hilltop, the Corso Vannucci for walking, Renaissance galleries, and city restaurants that make a change from country cooking.

Assisi
One of the great places of Italian art and pilgrimage, rising out of the plain in pale pink stone. Go early, walk the upper town, and see the Basilica of San Francesco before the coaches arrive.
